Do we live by faith like Jonathan or by fear like Saul? God can work through groups or by individuals. In the passage above we read that Jonathan set a test to see whether it was He (the Holy Spirit) which guided. It was He! Through His prompting Jonathan and Israel were victorious. God intended destruction for the nations in the land amongst them these uncircumcised men, the Philistines. They had over 400 years to repent of their ways. They didn't so God gave The Land to Israel.
Who is the Holy Spirit and what is His work? He is the Spirit of Truth. He is our advocate. The One who protects us. He lives within and belongs with us. He will not leave us as orphans. He also is in us and One with the Father and the Son.
He will lead us. If there's more of Him I want it! The anointing of Holy Spirit will bring new thoughts and actions. Look at Jonathan. He did great deeds. But Holy Spirit did it through him and can do through whoever wants to. He is much more glorious than Jonathan! He does this through relationship. He is a person not just an influence.
He won't draw attention to Himself. Only to Father through Jesus. His correct nature and work will teach all things. If we have short memory the Holy Spirit is all we need. Best He (Jesus) goes away so He (Holy Spirit) can be everywhere - not just in one place like Jesus. Of course, Jesus died on the Cross, was buried and rose again.
The Holy Spirit is active throughout history. Remember to learn though the Spirit and test the spirits. Reading Bible also will help us to discern. For instance, keep our eyes on Jesus rather than some experience.
Pour out Your Holy Spirit on us LORD Jesus. Put our dry, quenched sponge in the water of Him. Let Him flow through and fill us. Streams of living water in our spirit. Fully in Him and Him in us. If anyone thirsts, let him come to Jesus and drink. Amen.
